How Arts Training Improves Attention and Cognition -

psychotherapy:

Does education in the arts transfer to seemingly unrelated cognitive abilities? Researchers are finding evidence that it does. Michael Posner argues that when children find an art form that sustains their interest, the subsequent strengthening of their brains’ attention networks can improve cognition more broadly.

Art is good for the soul AND the mind!  One way to get your creative juices flowing is to decorate and submit a postcard to the PostSecret project, either to the original website or the Cornell edition!

2004's Asian & Asian American Campus Climate Task Force Report -

AAAF was born out of a problem that the students perceived with the Asian/Asian-American community on campus, thanks in large part to the findings of this report, conducted by the administration.

The report’s most significant results include

  1. 11 out of the 20 suicides committed at Cornell since 1996 were committed by students of Asian descent, even though we do not make up 55% of the student population.
  2. The highest rate of bias incidents on campus targeted women of Asian descent, including verbal, physical, and sexual attacks.
  3. A senior exit survey reported the highest level of dissatisfaction for students of Asian descent.

These shocking statistics spurred both the start of AAAF and a renewed effort to establish an Asian/Asian-American Center on campus.  How much progress do you think has been made since 2004?

Welcome to our new blog!

Hi all,

Thanks for visiting Asian & Asian-American Forum’s brand new blog!  On this blog, we’ll be posting relevant information about mental health, Asian/Asian-American issues, and our events.

As you probably know, AAAF focuses on the mental health and social well-being of students of Asian descent on Cornell’s campus.  We’re a student-run programming board that operates out of the Office of Student Support and Diversity Education, located on the second floor of Willard Straight Hall.  Be sure to stop by on Tuesdays at 5:00 pm when we have our weekly meetings!

Thanks,

Janelle
